Original Poster - Nick-o-ball 122319 Get Link Report Abuse OUTLOOK 2016 client fails to connect using IMAP with GMAIL account.

Using proper settings.

Clear that setting.

If you still have a problem, check this recipe: If you have two-step verification enabled on the account, you will need to use an application specific password (created in the account) in the Outlook settings: Signing in using application-specific passwords If not, you must enable less secure access: sign into the account using a web browser at, then go to Settings Accounts and Import Other Google Account settings.

Under Security, scroll down and enable access for less secure apps.

If necessary (its usually not), enter the letters in the distorted picture then press Continue.

This will allow ten minutes for Outlook to register as an approved connection.

Note that you must use the credentials for the account you are adding to Outlook - if the browser is already signed into another account, you must sign out first.

Also, you must trigger Outlook to make the connections within ten minutes of pressing Continue.

I get the Sorry, we could not sign you into Google - IMAP Error.

Exchange works - but Google just doesnt want to work with Microsoft.

Ive tried every solution proposed in this post.

None work. Wish you too big behmouths would decide to work together so I can avoid wasting two hours just trying to get email to work.

I guess I will switch to the worlds worst email client Google mail - which of course isnt a client - just a web interface.

The account setup is in place in Outlook and when I click sendreceive initially it appears to be promising: I get a Gmail prompt for email addresspassword, then I get a prompt to allow Outlook to read my emails and associate my personal info etc., but at the end I get this failure message.

What is really frustrating is that all of this worked on my old PC with Windows 7 and Outlook 2010, which is telling me that the war between Google and Microsoft is escalating.

I live in Silicone Valley, very disappointed that tech giants would be susceptible to following shameful examples in current politics.
